1. 작가 소개 _ About the Playwright

파코 가메즈(Paco Gámez)는 스페인의 극작가이자 배우, 연출가, 그리고 교육자이다. 그는 로뻬 데 베가 상(Lope de Vega), 깔데론 데 라 바르샤 상(Calderón de la Barca), 헤수스 깜뽀스 상(Jesús Campos), 헤수스 도밍게스 상(Jesús Domínguez), 스페인어 극작 토너먼트 우승, Teatro Español 코미디 공모 수상 등 수많은 상을 받은, 동시대 스페인에서 가장 주목받는 젊은 극작가 중 한 명이다.

스페인 하엔에서 영문학을 전공한 뒤, 세비야의 ESAD(스페인 연극예술 아카데미)에서 연극을 공부했고, 이후 배우로 활발히 활동했다. 우연히 시작한 글쓰기가 첫 작품 수상으로 이어졌고, 그 이후 그는 계속해서 글을 쓰며 무대 위의 언어를 탐구하고 있다.

Paco Gámez is a Spanish playwright, actor, director, and educator. He is one of the most acclaimed young playwrights in contemporary Spain, with numerous awards to his name, including the Lope de Vega Award, the Calderón de la Barca Award, the Jesús Campos Award, the Jesús Domínguez Award, the Spanish-Language Playwriting Tournament, and the Teatro Español Comedy Writing Competition.

After studying English Literature in Jaén, Spain, he trained in theater at ESAD in Seville and went on to work actively as an actor. What began as an unexpected turn toward writing led to his first award-winning play, and since then, he has continued to write, exploring the language of the stage.

<IMPUNIDAD> _ The Unpunished

<임푸니다드(IMPUNIDAD)>는 스페인 프랑코 독재 정권(1936 년 ~ 1975 년) 아래에서 고문을 자행하고도 끝내 처벌받지 않은 네 명의 고문 가해자를 통해, 권력의 잔혹한 본질과 제도적 침묵의 폭력을 고발하는 작품이다. 작가는 고문 피해자들이 겪은 고통과, 이를 외면한 사회와 제도의 침묵이 불러온 분노, 수치심, 좌절이 이 작품의 출발점이라고 말한다. 그는 이 작품을 통해 가해자들의 내면을 파고들며, 사람에게 상상 할 수도 없는 폭력을 가해한 뒤에도 아무렇지 않게 살아갈 수 있는지, 시간이 흐른 뒤에도 죄책감이나 후회는 없었는지, 혹시라도 용서를 구하거나 가해를 인정하고 사과하려 한 적은 없었는지를 묻는다. 이러한 질문을 바탕으로, 작가는 현실과 허구, 가해자의 목소리와 피해자의 증언, 사실과 신화, 있었던 일과 “있었을지도 모르는” 일들을 첨예한 말들로 교차시켜나간다. <임푸니다드>는 민주주의의 기반에 존재하는 균열을 드러내며, 제도적 망각과 침묵을 단호하게 거부하는 “망각에 맞서는 연극”이다.

<IMPUNIDAD> is a play that exposes the brutal nature of power and the violence of institutional silence through four perpetrators of torture who committed their acts under Spain’s Franco dictatorship from 1936 to 1975 and were never punished.

The playwright has said that the work began with the suffering endured by torture survivors, and with the anger, shame, and frustration caused by a society and its institutions that chose to look away. Through this play, Gámez delves into the inner lives of the perpetrators and asks: How could they inflict unimaginable violence on other human beings and continue living as if nothing had happened? Did they ever feel guilt or remorse over time? Did they ever seek forgiveness, acknowledge what they had done, or attempt to apologize?

Grounded in these questions, the play sharply interweaves reality and fiction, the voices of perpetrators and the testimonies of victims, fact and myth, what happened and what “might have happened.” IMPUNIDAD reveals the fractures beneath the foundations of democracy and stands as a theater of resistance against institutional forgetting and silence.

<인낄리노(Inquilino)> _ 세입자

<INQUILINO> _ The Tenant

<인낄리노(Inquilino)>는 터무니없는 임대료 인상으로 삶의 터전을 잃게 된 한 남자의 이야기이자, 오늘날 우리가 살아가는 “풍경”을 희극적으로 그려낸 작품이다. 지극히 평범한 남자의 너무나 흔한 비극. 하지만 그 평범함은 어느 순간 우스꽝스러울 만큼 부조리하게 뒤틀리고, 집주인의 임대료 인상 통보는 점차 사회적, 존재론적 질문으로 확장된다. 이 작품은 실화에 기반한 작가의 자전적 이야기이자, 사회적 현실과 개인적 고백, 다큐멘터리와 픽션이 교차하는 독특한 무대 언어를 가지고 있다. 전혀 웃기지 않은 이야기를 유머로 말하며, 슬픔을 코미디로 말하는 이 작품은 결코 가볍지 않은 무게를 경쾌하게 던진다. 이곳엔 그로테스크함과 시, 편집증과 고전, 비극과 희극이 뒤섞여 있다. <인낄리노(Inquilino)>는 집을 잃게 되는 개인의 이야기를 통해, 이 세상에 질문을 던지는 연극이다.

<INQUILINO> is the story of a man who is forced out of his home by an absurd rent increase, and a comic portrait of the “landscape” we inhabit today.

It is the all-too-common tragedy of an ordinary man. Yet that ordinariness gradually twists into something absurdly ridiculous, and the landlord’s notice of a rent increase expands into broader social and existential questions.

Based on the playwright’s own experience, the work moves between social reality and personal confession, documentary and fiction, creating a distinctive theatrical language. By telling a story that is not funny at all through humor, and by speaking of sadness through comedy, the play delivers its weight with striking lightness.

Here, the grotesque and the poetic, paranoia and the classical, tragedy and comedy all collide. Through the story of one person losing his home, INQUILINO asks a question of the world we live in.

3. CREATIVE틈의 스페인어권 희곡 낭독 쇼케이스

_ CREATIVE TEUM's Spanish-Language Play Reading Showcase

CREATIVE틈과 함께 하는 창작자들에게 이번 낭독쇼케이스를 통해 새로운 “동력”을 불어 넣고 싶었다. 그리고 이 동력은 크틈이 앞으로 연극을 지속할 수 있게 하는 큰 힘이 될 것이라고 생각한다. 우리는 BACK TO THE BASIC 이라는 기조로 두 번의 워크숍을, 경기문화재단의 쇼케이스 지원사업으로 <명동예술극장 가는 길>이라는 창작 쇼케이스를 했고, 워크숍을 통해 개발한 <빛내기를 위한 안내서>로 첫번째 정식 공연을 올렸다. 창작욕과 창작력은 샘솟지 않는다. 그리고 샘솟지 않는 우물을 계속 파는 것 만큼 고통스러운 일도 없다. 그렇다고 창작을 포기할 것은 아니지만, 바닥나버린 우물을 채울 수 있는 시간이 필요했다. 계속 연극을, 신이 나서 창작할 수 있는 동력이 필요했다. 그래서 찾기 시작했다. 뭐가 우리를 설레이게, 신나게 할 수 있는가.

“창작 초연”과 “국내 초연”

창작 초연은 한번 공연을 하였고. 그렇다면 남은 것은 “국내 초연”이다. 외국 희곡을 한다면 어떤 언어권의 희곡을 선택해야 할까? 영어는 너무 많다. 일본어도 너무 많다. 프랑스어도 많다. 그렇다면 어떤 언어가 있지? 운이 좋게도 가까운 곳에 새로운 언어가 있었다! 어릴 적에 아르헨티나로 이민을 가, 성인이 넘어서까지 살다온 동료가 있었다. 그렇게 새로운 언어를 만났다.

“스페인어”

스페인어는 중국어 다음으로 많이 사용되어지는 언어다. 그런데 스페인어 희곡들이 한국에 번역되어 소개 된 작품은 그렇게 많지 않았고, 특히나 동시대 희곡은 거의 없었다. 그렇게 우리는 설레는 마음으로 리서치를 시작했고, 파코 가메즈를 만나게 되었고, 그의 대표작인 <임푸니다드>와 <인낄리노>를 만나게 되었다. 우리는 새로운 “동력”을 찾아냈다. 새로운 “처음”을 함께한다는 것은 설레이고, 신이 난다. 크틈은 이번 낭독 쇼케이스를 발판삼아, 지속적으로 동시대 스페인어권의 희곡을 리서치하고, 소개하는 작업을 지속해보고자 한다.

Through this reading showcase, Creative Teum hoped to bring new momentum to the artists who create alongside us. We believe that this renewed energy will become a driving force that enables us to continue making theater in the years to come. Under the guiding principle of Back to the Basic, we have organized two workshops, created the original showcase On the Way to Myeongdong Theater through the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation's Showcase Support Program, and presented our first full-scale production, A Guide to Becoming Luminous, which was developed through those workshops. Creative desire and artistic inspiration do not simply spring forth on their own. And there are few things more painful than continuing to dig an empty well. Giving up on creation was never an option, but we needed time to refill that well. We needed a source of energy that would allow us to keep making theater with excitement and joy. So we began asking ourselves: What could truly excite us? What could make our hearts race again?

"World Premiere" and "Korean Premiere"

We had already experienced the excitement of presenting original works. What remained was the possibility of a Korean premiere.

If we were to stage foreign plays, which language tradition should we explore? There were already countless works translated from English, Japanese, and French. Was there another possibility?

Fortunately, a new language was closer than we had imagined. One of our collaborators had immigrated to Argentina as a child and lived there well into adulthood. Through this encounter, we discovered a new language:

"Spanish"

Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world. Yet relatively few Spanish-language plays have been translated and introduced in Korea, and contemporary works are especially rare. With excitement and curiosity, we began our research. That journey led us to Paco Gámez and to two of his representative works, IMPUNIDAD and INQUILINO.

In doing so, we found a new source of momentum. There is something deeply exciting about sharing a new beginning together. Building upon this reading showcase, Creative Teum hopes to continue researching, introducing, and presenting contemporary Spanish-language plays on an ongoing basis.
