1. 작품 소개 _ About the Works

이렇게 계속 가다보면, 언젠간 명동예술극장에 갈 수 있을까?

우리는 각자의 영역에서 중심에 서기를 원하고, 주류가 되기를 꿈꾼다. 모두가 그 꿈을 이루지는 못하지만, 비주류의 영역에서 우리는 중심에 가 닿기위해 끊임없이 노력한다. 그러나 항상 이런 질문이 머릿속을 떠다닌다.

"나는 지금 어디에 서 있고, 중심은, 주류는 어디에 있는가"

아직 중심에 닿지 못한 모든 비주류들의 이야기를 담아 <명동예술극장 가는 길>을 시작한다. 1부는 배우이자 명동 거리 화장품 로드샵에서 일하고 있는 A, 명동예술극장에서 무대감독으로 근무하고 있는 B, 머나먼 경기도에서 매일 서울을 오가는 연극연출가 C의 개인적인 모노로그를 중심으로 작품은 시작된다. 본 작품은 총 3부로 구성되어 있다. 이번 쇼케이스에서는 중심으로 나아가는 첫 걸음인 1부를 선보인다.

이 작품은, "분류" 라는 키워드에서 시작됐다. 막연하게만 알고 있었던 대한민국 연극예술계의 분류. 그 안에서, 우리는, 나는 어떤 분류에 속하고 있는가? 그 전에, 대한민국 연극예술계는 어떠한 분류의 기준으로 나뉘어 있는걸까? 어떤 카테고리들이 있는걸까? 조금 더 거시적인 관점에서 바라본다면, 창작하고 관객을 만나는 예술가들은 이 세상에서 어떠한 카테고리로 분류가 될까? 내가 가고자하는, 속하고자 하는 분류는 어디일까? 좁게는 지금 내가, 우리가 대한민국 연극예술계에서 어느 지점에 있고, 어느 지점까지 가고 싶은지, 넓게는 이 세상에서 우리는 어떤 분류에 속해있고, 어떤 분류에 속하고 싶어하는지를 계속 나누고, 정리하고, 분류하다보면 찾아낼 수 있지 않을까. 이 과정을 마치면 분류의 끝은 다시 처음이 된다. 그리고 우리는 이 처음에서부터 다시 출발해보고자 한다.

If we keep moving forward like this, will we someday arrive at Myeongdong Theater?

We all aspire to stand at the center of our own fields. We dream of becoming part of the mainstream. Not everyone reaches that destination, but from the margins, we continue striving toward what we believe lies at the center.

And yet one question never leaves us:

"Where am I standing now? And where is the center?"

On the Way to Myeongdong Theater begins with the stories of those who have not yet reached that center. Part I unfolds through a series of personal monologues by three characters: A, an actor working at a cosmetics store in Myeongdong; B, a stage manager at Myeongdong Theater; and C, a theater director who commutes daily from Gyeonggi Province to Seoul. The complete work is structured in three parts. This showcase presents Part I, the first step on the journey toward the center.

The project began with a single word: classification. How is the Korean theater landscape classified? Where do we belong within it? Before answering that question, we found ourselves asking another: By what standards is Korean theater categorized in the first place? What are the boundaries that define its landscape? Looking beyond theater, how are artists who create and meet audiences positioned within society? Where do we stand? Where do we hope to belong? By continually observing, questioning, organizing, and redefining these categories, we search not only for our place within Korean theater, but also for our place in the wider world. And perhaps, when we finally reach the end of classification, we discover that its end is also its beginning.

From that beginning, we choose to start again.
